Sky Woman & Turtle Island - Cardboard Crankie

The Native Americian creation story of Turtle Island has always fascinated me. After working with my favorite camp, Turtleback Farms,( an environmental camp on the North Fork of Long Island), I was determined to share the story with puppets. In creating the story, I decided to make a Crankie that would be used vertically and work front and back. Originally, I was going to paint on scroll but after attending a Crankie Festival in Wales, I saw the array of scrolls that could be used. I was so inspired that I bought some black ink Thai marbled decorative paper! The rest was easy, especially since I had my brother, Rick to help with the drawings of Skywoman and the turtle! I was lucky enough to be able to share the story with camp kids!
